At less than 50 kilometres from Granada and the coast, and at the foot of the highest mountain range of the Spanish continent, lies the village of Lanjarón, renowned for its pure and wholesome mineral water. When you drive up the mountain roads (partially dirt track) for 15 minutes climbing to a height of 1,150 metres above sea level, you arrive at the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park (Unesco Biosphere Reserve). From here you can enjoy views of both the Mediterranean and high mountain peaks. From behind a hillside a lush terrain catches the eye and hidden behind a big chestnut tree lies the old cortijo that welcomes you.
The more than 200 year old river stone cortijo is the heart of the house. Here you will find the communal living room and dining area that are accessible from the terrace in front of the cortijo. The communal space is provided with boardgames, books, free internetacces and of course a wood burning stove to keep you warm in the cooler months of the year. All guestrooms also lead out to the terrace, where each has its own private part. All rooms are situated in the newer parts of the cortijo. Each room has its own luxurious en-suite tadelakt bathroom and is decorated in the spirit of the location with natural and Moorish influences.
At Alpujarra Guesthouse we promote a sustainable way of life. As the cortijo is off-grid (meaning that we are not connected to mains water and electricity), we rely on spring water and solar power.
At the end of the slate terrace you will find the plunge pool which will keep you cool in the hot summer months. The pool is fed by natural spring water that supplies the finca. In fact, all the water we use comes straight from the high mountains through an ancient system of irrigation channels called acequias. The solar boilers on the roof provide you with hot water. Solar panels catch the abundant sunight and transform it into electricity for our use.
Sustainable also means that part of the fruit and vegetables you will be served are home grown and organic. With its 3 hectares the finca has plenty of space to do so. One part of the terrain is planted with cherry- and medlar trees, while other parts provide chestnuts, pinenuts, olives, almonds, pears, grapes, quinces and berries. And then of course there is the vegetable plot which is irrigated with filtered wastewater from the cortijo. As you can see, we are making the most of our natural resources.
Come and enjoy the peace and quiet of rural mountain life where you can take the dog for a walk on our own terrain, explore all the nooks and views it has to offer, relax in a hammock by the pool, share a healthy homecooked meal and discover the Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada. On foot, bike or horseback.
Alpujarra Guesthouse is conveniently situated between the two long distance hiking paths GR7 and GR240 (Sulayr). Many mountainbike routes are to be found in the direct surroundings. And horse riding centre Caballo Blanco is at less then one kilometre from the finca.
